Undernourished Children in Karnataka

The State-wise details of prevalence of malnutrition among children in the country including Karnataka, as per the National Family Health Survey – 4 (NFHS-4) are Annexed.

As per the information received, State Government of Karnataka is undertaking following measures to address undernourishment among children:

Supplementary Nutrition is provided under the Anganwadi Services Scheme at the Anganwadi Centers to children under-6 years of age.

Pregnant Women and Lactating Mothers are provided Hot Cooked Meals at the AnganwadiCenters under the Mathrupoorna Scheme.

Children (3-6 years age) are provided egg for 2 days in a week.

Under the KsheerBhagya Scheme, children (6 months – 6 years) are provided 150 ml milk per day for 5 days in a week.

All moderately and severely malnourished children (6 months – 6 years) of the 5 backward districts, viz., Bidar, Gulbarga, Raichur, Koppal and Yadgir are provided egg for 3 days in a week and whole milk for 3 days in a week. The children who do not consume egg are provided whole milk 6 days in a week.

An amount of Rs. 2000/- is given to severely malnourished children for medical expenses and therapeutic food. Further, malnourished children are treated at Nutrition Rehabilitation Centers under the Department of Health and Family Welfare.

Additionally, to reduce malnourishment and minimize low birth weight, maternity benefit of Rs. 5000/- is given under the Pradhan MantriMatruVandanaYojana and Rs. 6000/- under the State MukhyaMantriMathrushree Scheme to pregnant women and lactating mothers.
