The father of the Indian Constitution B.R. Amebdkar would have “disapproved” and have been “critical” of political leadership being passed down through inheritance, Shashi Tharoor said on Thursday. He was answering a question at the launch of his 24th book Ambedkar - A Life .

When asked about Ambedkar’s views on state parties concentrating power in the hands of respective families, he said that Ambedkar had not anticipated it, but as person who was never very convinced of the logic of caste system, he would not have accepted the inheritance principle anyway in politics or otherwise.

“Though he has not written about it, that it is a fairly safe assumption that he would have disapproved and would have been quite critical of the idea that political leadership should go through inheritance rather than election or other form of merit,” Mr. Tharoor said.
