While Kolkata has turned out to be the second safest city as far as the number of crimes per lakh of population is concerned, West Bengal recorded a poor performance in several key areas in 2016 as per the latest data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), published on Thursday.

The State registered the highest number of cases in the country in terms of human trafficking, attempt to murder and causing grievous hurt to the sufferers in 2016. The State also came second with regard to crimes against women. However, it does not figure among the top three states to record the highest number of rapes in 2016.

3,579 trafficking cases

West Bengal reported 3,579 cases of human trafficking cases, which is about 44% of the total such cases. Rajasthan occupied the second spot with 1,422 (17.49%) of such cases, while Gujarat came third with 648 such cases (4.9%).

As for cases of attempt to murder, West Bengal occupied the top slot with 11,973 cases, accounting for nearly 25% of the total number of such cases in the country in 2016. Bihar occupied the second spot with 6,998 cases, followed by Uttar Pradesh with 5,109 cases.

In terms of crimes of against women, West Bengal occupied the second spot with 32,513 cases (9.6%) while Uttar Pradesh topped the list with 49,262 cases (14.5%). Maharashtra occupied the third spot with 31,388 (9.71%) cases. In 2015 too, West Bengal occupied the second spot in this category with 33,212 cases.

But according to the NCRB data, Kolkata registered the second lowest number of crimes per lakh of population (159.6) after Coimbatore (149.5).

Chennai was listed as the third safest city (194). Out of the 5,13,635 crimes recorded in 19 metropolitan cities, only 1.6% took place in Kolkata.
