Participation of Youth in Sports

Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS) through Sports Authority of India has been implementing the following Sports Promotional Schemes in the age groups of 8-25 years in 27 sports disciplines to identify and nurture sports talent across the country.

 

•           National Sports Talent Contest Scheme (NSTC)

•           Army Boys Sports Company (ABSC)

•           SAI Training Centre (STC)

•           Special Area Games (SAG)

•           Extension Centre of STC/SAG

•           Centre of Excellence (COE)

 

For implementation of the above schemes, SAI has established 2 Academic and 10 Regional Centres across the country. Majority of sportspersons identified and nurtured under SAI Schemes belong to rural, tribal, coastal, hilly and backward areas of the country. At present, under SAI Schemes total 14143 talented sportspersons (9843 boys and 4300 girls) are provided with regular sports training on residential and non-residential basis.

 

SAI has established 23 sports centres under NSTC, STC & Extension Centres of STC/SAG in the State of Rajasthan, where 737 talented sportspersons, majority of them from rural and tribal area are being trained in the State.

 

This Ministry is also implementing a Central Sector Scheme, namely Khelo India which has twelve verticals to cater the entire population also covering talented youth / sportsperson from rural / tribal areas of the country including Rajasthan. The scheme has a dedicated vertical ‘Talent Identification and Development’ provides for financial assistance to identified talented players at various levels through different avenues and annual financial assistance, at the rate of Rs.5.00 lakh per annum, for a period of 8 years under a Long Term Athlete Development Programme is provided.

 

For implementation of SAI Sports Promotional Schemes across the country, the scheme-wise details of funds utilized are at Annexure, where total 42734 sportspersons were benefited during the last three years.

 

This information was given by Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Youth Affairs and Sports Shri Col. Rajyavardhan Rathore Retd in a written reply to the Lok Sabha today.
