The Minister of State for Road Transport and Shipping and Chemical & Fertilizers Shri Mansukh L Mandaviya in a written reply to a question in Lok Sabha today informed that as per the data received from police departments of States/UTs, significant reduction in road accidents and fatality have been achieved in the calendar year 2017. Incidence of road accidents have declined by 3.3 per cent in 2017 as compared to 2016. There is a 1.9 per cent fall in the number of persons killed in road accidents in 2017.

The Minister further informed that Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) was launched on 9th May, 2015 by the Government to provide accidental insurance cover including for road accidents. PMSBY provides accidental death/disability insurance cover of Rs. 2 Lakhs for an annual premium of Rs.12/-. Any person within the age group of 18-70 years having a bank account can enrol for PMSBY. The scheme is offered/ administered through Insurance Companies both public sector and private in tie-up with scheduled commercial banks / Regional Rural Banks / Cooperative Banks concerned.
